Det å ruse seg er intet nytt for menneskeheten. Trangen til å forandre sin sinnstilstand har vært stor i mange kulturer verden rundt gjennom det moderne menneskets historie. Det er derfor interessant hvorfor dette er så tabubelagt område i det vestelige samfunnet idag. Skammer man seg for eksempel over at vikingene spiste masse flein/flue sopp før de gikk til kamp?
